Cytopathology is the study of cells and its abnormalities. ‘Cyto’ means cell and ‘Pathology’ refers to the diseases.
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC)
FNAC is a procedure done to analyze any abnormal swelling/lump in the body. It is a procedure where narrow gauge needle is introduced into the swelling/lump (sometimes under radiological guidance, if the lesion is deep-seated or small in size) and cells are extracted by creating a negative pressure using plunger of the syringe. The cells collected in the bore of the needle is then transferred on to a slide, allowed to fix in alcohol media, stained and then examined under the microscope for the diagnosis.
