“More is missed by not looking than by not
knowing” – Thomas McCrae
Histopathology or Surgical Pathology is the study of tissues. It includes the gross and microscopic examination of the specimens.
The Gross examination refers to documentation of the site, orientation, description, dissection and also the selection of areas for microscopic examination. Certain complicated or oncological specimens demand knowledge and experience for proper evaluation of the tissue. The Gross examination is particularly important for large resected specimens whereas for small biopsies it is less significant.
